Gloucester. It is named after Thomas Pownall- former governor of Massachusetts and is drained by the eastern branches of the Royal River, crossed by Maine State Route 9 (a numbered state highway in Maine) and the Chandler River flows through the town.
With homes and few farmhouses, most of the town is a rural residential area. The town of Pownal is home to Bradbury Mountain State park-one of Maine’s original 5 state parks. Comprising 610 acres, the park is situated on route 9 near the intersection with Elmwood Road. The park has two areas; one for camping and one for outdoor activities. You can easily spend a day here exploring trails or enjoying picnicking, mountain biking and camping.  Around 45 minutes’ easy walk to the summit of the park rewards you with a panoramic view of the surrounding area.
Whether you are a visitor or a resident, Pownal offers you an array of recreational activities.
